Breaking: Mechanism's Basegrip Lets You Attach Steam Controller to Any Phone
Gamers eager to use Valve's new Steam Controller with their smartphones finally have an answer. Accessory maker Mechanism announced Sunday that its Basegrip mount will launch Monday, the same day as the $99 controller. It is the first third-party accessory designed to physically attach the Steam Controller to a phone or almost any surface.

"We were given early access to the controller's design by Valve, which allowed us to engineer a precise, secure fit," said Mark Thompson, Mechanism's product lead. "The Basegrip transforms the Steam Controller into a mobile gaming companion."
How It Works
The Basegrip snaps onto the Steam Controller's rear expansion port. When combined with Mechanism's phone mount, it holds most smartphones securely. Users can then stream PC games to their phone via Steam Link and play with full controller ergonomics.
The mount also works with Mechanism's existing line of accessories. These include mounts for the Ikea Skadis pegboard system, monitor arms, and tripods, allowing gamers to hang the controller anywhere.
Background: The Steam Controller's Long-Awaited Arrival
Valve's Steam Controller launches Monday after years of development and multiple delays. Priced at $99, it features dual trackpads, haptic feedback, and customizable controls. Unlike typical gamepads, it targets both traditional and PC-specific genres like real-time strategy and simulation.

Mechanism, known for modular mounting solutions, has previously produced mounts for Xbox and PlayStation controllers. The company saw an opportunity with the Steam Controller's unique shape and expansion port.
What This Means for Mobile Gaming
While phones can already connect to Bluetooth controllers, mounting the controller directly to the device offers a more integrated experience. It eliminates the need to prop up the phone separately, making gaming on the go or on a couch simpler.
"This unlocks the potential for mobile PC gaming without compromise," said Rachel Lee, a gaming hardware analyst. "The Basegrip bridges the gap between high-powered PC streaming and handheld convenience."
However, the controller alone weighs more than most phones, and the total device is bulky. But for dedicated gamers, the trade-off may be worth it.
Availability and Pricing
The Basegrip for Steam Controller will be available Monday on Mechanism's website and through select retailers. Pricing is set at $24.99. The phone mount accessory is sold separately for $14.99. Bundle options are also available.
