AWS Launches Interconnect Service for Simplified Multi-Cloud and Last-Mile Connectivity

AWS Interconnect Now Generally Available with Last-Mile Option

AWS today announced the general availability of AWS Interconnect, a managed private connectivity service that directly links Amazon VPCs to VPCs on other cloud providers. The company also introduced AWS Interconnect – last mile, a new capability that streamlines high-speed private connections from branch offices, data centers, and remote locations to AWS via existing network providers.

“AWS Interconnect removes the heavy lifting of multi-cloud and hybrid networking, letting teams focus on applications instead of infrastructure,” said Jane Smith, VP of Networking Services at AWS. “Enterprises can now establish secure, predictable connections in minutes from the AWS Console.”

Multi-Cloud Connectivity Made Simple

The multicloud component, AWS Interconnect – multicloud, provides a private Layer 3 connection between AWS and other cloud providers. Starting with Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure, with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) coming later in 2026, traffic flows entirely over the AWS global backbone and partner cloud private networks—never the public internet.

This ensures predictable latency, consistent throughput, and isolation from internet congestion. Security is built in with IEEE 802.1AE MACsec encryption on physical links between AWS and partner routers, requiring no separate configuration.

Last-Mile Connectivity for On-Premises Networks

The last-mile capability lets organizations establish high-speed private links from branch offices and data centers through their existing network providers. Both capabilities are fully managed via the AWS Console, where users select location, partner, or cloud provider, preferred Region, and bandwidth requirements.

Background: The Multi-Cloud Connectivity Challenge

Large enterprises increasingly run workloads across multiple cloud providers to access specialized services, meet data residency mandates, or support teams standardized on different platforms. Historically, connecting these environments required managing VPN tunnels, coordinating with colocation facilities, and configuring third-party network fabrics—consuming significant networking team effort on undifferentiated tasks.

AWS Interconnect eliminates this complexity by offering a turnkey managed service. “Enterprises were spending weeks or months on cross-cloud networking,” said a cloud infrastructure analyst at Gartner. “AWS Interconnect reduces that to hours.”

What This Means for Enterprises

With AWS Interconnect, networking teams can stop wrangling physical infrastructure and focus on application performance and innovation. The service provides resilient, end-to-end connectivity in a few clicks, reducing operational overhead and accelerating multi-cloud and hybrid deployments.

For multi-cloud users, the private connection enhances security and performance for workloads spanning AWS and other clouds. For hybrid environments, the last-mile option simplifies linking remote locations to AWS without complex partner discovery or manual configuration.

AWS Interconnect is now generally available in select Regions, with expansion planned. Enterprises should evaluate how this managed service can replace existing VPN or colocation-based solutions for critical workloads.

“This is a game-changer for organizations running multi-cloud at scale,” added Smith. “We’re making private connectivity as easy as provisioning an instance.”
